The 2018 Audi RS3 - Wild, Exclusive Performance That's Made For Us

When an automaker like Audi builds a car for our specific market, it's hard not to feel special. When that car is the long-pined for 2018 RS3 that we've never even seen on this side of the pond, the results can be considered nothing short of exclusively wild. Especially since the new Audi Sport division has improved it miles beyond the car American enthusiasts originally dreamed of.

The original RS3 made waves in 2011 with an iron-block turbocharged inline-five with 335-odd horsepower, and a unique 1-2-4-5-3 ignition order. Although only offered in the "sportback" style that's popular in Europe, our love for anything the Quattro GmBH division and hatches didn't discriminate. But times have changed. The team behind the RS badge is now renamed 'Audi Sport,' and is led by a chief who doesn't just want to give us the cars we love, but made for us. That's enough to make any premium shopper's ears perk up.

So what does Audi Sport's America-conceived present have in store? For one, it's the first sedan to wear the RS3 badge--but that takes back seat to it's heart-and-soul. The 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five returns, as does it's ignition firing order, and stroke and bore dimensions. However, not a single part remains from the old motor. The iron block is replaced by an aluminum one, and the sum of its fresh imaginings total to an output of 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

When experienced through the RS-tuned quattro all-wheel drive system, which receives power by way of a seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and has an easy-to-use launch control system, 60 mph is a scant 3.9 seconds away. But where other Audi models limit the amount of power the torque-sensing AWD system can send to each axle (40/60 percent front to back on the A4 in normal driving, for example), no such limits are to be found on the RS3.

Instead, Audi Sport fitted the car with a rear differential that can handle 1,475 lb-ft of torque, while programming the on-board computers to just launch as much spinning force aft as possible. Are the dynamics RWD? A little. But when accompanied by the crackling, snarly burbles of the exhaust, fast-climbing revs, and the immersive, emotional experience of launching this small sedan, even rear-wheel die-hards may agree that the RS3 is in a class all its' own.
